The following is some background information about the Internet of Things, in preparation for a speech at Kemp Mill Toastmasters on January 4, 2017. I gave a technical introduction for the non-technical audience as Toastmasters Advanced Communicator Series, Technical Presentations, Project # 5 – Enhancing a Technical Talk with the Internet.
The PowerPoint presentation is available as a PowerPoint or an Adobe PDF file.
The Internet of Things includes devices connected through the internet, beyond the ordinary servers and other user-accessed computers. This can range from factories and power plants to medium-sized devices such as home appliances to small devices such as individual light bulbs. The possibilities for good – and potentially for bad – are staggering.
- A good overview (subject to the occasional bad edit) is available on Wikipedia at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_things.
- The Internet of “Things” has nothing to do with Dr. Seuss’s Thing 1 and Thing 2, except in this poem: If Dr. Seuss could comment upon IoT, this is what he might say.
